5 Favorites to Keep Skin Hydrated in Winter Months

The country sure is having some crazy weather this year! Freezing cold one day and then warmer temps in the 50’s the next. As we all know, moisture drops in the air when it gets cold (insert how much moisture drops in the winter) so you’ve got to be prepared on all fronts. A good moisturizer is good but it’s not the whole picture. Here are my recommendations (clockwise L to R):

5-Favorites-to-Keep-Skin-Hydrated-in-Winter-Months

CAUDALIE Gentle Cleansing Milk ($28/6.7oz, $38/13.5oz @ sephora.com and nordstrom.com) – in the colder months, the less foam the better. Switch to a cleansing lotion, milk or oil so the skin’s pH doesn’t change and it’s able to maintain a good moisture level. This one from Caudalie is also great at removing makeup and is free of parabens, sulfates, dyes and Petrochemicals, among others.

HONEYWELL Top Fill Warm Mist ($39.99 @ amazon.com) – a humidifier? Yup, I swear by them and have for years. As soon as I have to pull the heating blanket out, the humidifier is set up too. I turn it on at night and let it run until the next morning. And I find a warm mist is much better at putting moisture in the air then one emitting cool mist. This one from Honeywell is filer-free, so don’t have to worry about mold and mildew developing (ewww!) inside the unit, it’s quiet and can run up to 24-hours on one 1.3 gallon fill-up. And such a great price on this one!

BITE BEAUTY Agave Lip Mask ($26/15g @ sephora.com) – besides my nasal cavity, my lips are the other place that seems to be zapped of moisture when temps drop. And just out is this lip mask that is a super moisturizer for lips. Besides the combo of organic agave nextar and vanilla CO2 that promotes healing, the fact that it is able to stay on lips and not just disappear is also why it’s able to do an excellent job. Thanks BITE!

KOH GEN DO Oriental Plants Deep Moisture Mask ($90/1.34oz @ sephora.com) – skin will need some added moisture so using this face mask once a week will really help. And this one does its work while you sleep as it’s a no-rinse clear formula. Just apply some at the end of your nightly skincare routine and hit the hay.

EMINENCE ORGANIC SKIN CARE Vanilla Mint Hand Cream ($14/2oz @ amazon.com) – hands are out there and in the elements and can show your age if they’re not taken care of. This one from Eminence is super hydrating using Shea Butter and also contains denatured alcohol, which is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic. And it smells great!

Spring (Scents) Are in the Air!

Everything is coming up … springtime scents right now and here are just a few that are at the top of my list. Each highlights a floral or fruit we often associate with spring. Are any of these your favorites?

Spring-Scents-2013-Part-1EMINENCE ORGANIC Apricot Sugar Scrub ($48/8.4oz @ eminenceorganic.com)– this one smells like the definition of Spring and it’s made of all things good for the skin like Alpha Hydroxy Acids, apricot juice and pulp and their signature Biocomplex, which is a concoction of antioxidants and vitamins.

INEKE Hothouse Flower ($95/2.5oz @ ineke.com and amazon.com) – If you are all about gardenia, this is a good one to investigate. Know that this is not your typical gardenia though; it’s a little complex with the mix of notes like earl grey tea, green foliage, fig, frankincense on a base of guiaiacwood and musk.

THYMES Temple Tree Jasmine Body Wash ($19/9.25oz @ shoptiques.com) – another one you have to have to really welcome Spring and that’s jasmine. This one puts it front and center with a mix of jasmine, honeysuckle, ylang ylang, damask rose and coconut milk.

HOUSE OF HOUBIGANT Orangers en Fleurs ($180/3.3oz eau de parfum, $600/3.3oz parfum @ neimanmarcus.com) – how could you welcome Spring and not do it with orange? This one highlights orange but really steps up the sexiness by adding Rose Absolute, Egyptian Jasmine Absolute, middle notes or Tuberose, Eau de Brouts, Ylang Comores and Nutmeg on a base of Cedar Wood and Musk. Really unique! It also comes in a lotion and crème for layering.

Do You Want Salt or Sugar With That?

This is something you have to ask yourself now when deciding upon a body scrub. Not only are you faced with, do I want a sugar or salt in my scrub but also do I want oil in my scrub or not? I thought we’d seen it all when it came to these body exfoliating products but then I experienced EMINENCE ORGANIC Cranberry Pomegranate Sugar Scrub ($48/8.4oz @ dermstore.com). Wowee!

The concoction is packed in a separate baggie inside the plastic container because it is so gooey. And in this case gooey is good. It stays where you apply it instead of sliding off your skin and down the drain or splattered against the shower walls. And it truly smells like fresh cranberries so much so that I could eat it. Well I didn’t eat it but I tasted a little. Sugar. And the ingredients read like a cooking recipe: Cranberry, Pomegranate, Raw Sugar Cane Granules, Green Tea, Comfrey, Butcher's Broom (relieves inflammation), Sweet Almond, Grape Seed Oil, and Ground Flaxseeds. And that’s all of them! It does have Grape Seed in it but it’s a very low concentrate so there won’t be any slipping in the tub. This is a line to pay attention to.
