Penhaligon's Tralala Gets Playful

I wonder what the percentage of importance the fragrance industry considers the overall packaging, which includes the actual bottle, when it comes to putting out a new scent? The latest from PENHALIGON’S is Tralala EDP ($200/3.4oz @ penhaligons.com and smallflower.com) is a clear demonstration of its importance and wow, I’m just stunned at the story this tells as you see the box and upon opening it. The doll inside the doll box brings back memories of childhood and the face on the doll reminds me of the clothespin dolls I used to make in art class as a child.

Upon reading more about this release, I see that the scent was made for East London fashion designers, Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff, and the depth of this one will certainly entertain the nose for a while! The design duo’s shows have been scented by Penhaligon’s for the past nine seasons, so it was only a matter of time for this collaboration to happen.

The name Tralala was chosen for its innocence but it seems that there is a paradox when it comes to the name and packaging and the actual scent; the name and packaging are certainly childlike and demonstrate purity  but the scent is truly grown up. Perhaps that’s what they were going for?

Part of me feels this might be an acquired taste type-of-scent, even for me. In the 10 or so times I’ve worn it, a few of the times I was not in the mood for it after a few hours, but other times I reveled in it every time I inhaled and caught a subtle wiff. Overall, I like it and would recommend it for someone who is really into heady, statement scents, as this is not one for the once-in-a-while perfume lover.

And this scent lasts! Each evening, I like to stand in front of my perfume table and pick a perfume to spray on before I go to bed. When I sprayed this one on one eve, I woke up the next morning and could still smell it.

The scent sounds intriguing, but that doll head is creepy. Oh well, at least its not a clown.
