Finally Found! 2 For Full-Proof HAC-ing!

Have you tried HAC-ing yet (highlighting and contouring)? I mean really tried it like you see in the picture below by @DressYourFace and do your whole face? I have but not this heavy and I still can’t get it to look right all around my face; just parts of it. Like I have the cheeks down and then around the outside of the face, well, most of the time it looks right … I think.

HAC-ing-example-from-@dressyourface

Part of the reason I think I always feel it could look better is that I feel like I’m using the wrong brush and wrong shades of HAC-ing powder. I made some recommendations from some palettes here but for me it seems that most of the shades work for me but not all of them, for the most part, in a given palette. Maybe I just need to take a few of them to someone who really knows how to do it and get a tutorial already! Or, I can just stick to keeping it simply with these next two that I find work great for me.

Makeup Brushes You Need to Know About

Do yourself a favor this week and give your makeup brushes the once over. Do you have the ones you need? Do you like them? Are there ones you need to toss? If you need to pick up some new ones, I recommend giving the new Heavenly Luxe Brushes that just came out from IT COSMETICS a visit.

Made from synthetic hair, the brand really seems to have looked at what kind of brushes we women need or what’s missing in the market place. Here are my favorites from the collection:

IT-Cosmetics-Heavenly-Luxe-Brush-Collection

1. Dual Airbrush Concealer Brush ($24) – this is a great one for the purse as it comes in its own case. One side is fluff for buffing color on lids and the other can also be used for shadows but as the name states, also concealer under the eyes (they could have done better with the cap on this side though. It catches some of the bristles and bends them when I put it on).

2. Mega Fan Brush ($48) – great for applying bronzer under the jaw or for using powders. Love this one!

3. Wand Ball Powder Brush ($48) – this one’s fibers measure 2” long at their longest and is so soft! You’ll get a nice application of face powder with this one.

4. Pointed Precision Complexion Brush ($38) – get into any creases and harder to reach areas like around the nose with this pointed baby.

5. Flat Top Buffing Foundation Brush ($48) – I can’t resist a flat-top brush as I feel like I have the most control with one.

6. No Tug Dual Eyeshadow Brush ($24) – the longer bristled-side will become your go to eye shadow brush! It’s the perfect size and everything. The shorter side is great for smudging.

7. Tightliner 10-in-1 Dual-Ended Brush ($24) – one side is an angled brush to help get color in between lashes and the other side is for lining the water line with color.

8. Jumbo Powder Brush ($58) – they say the bigger the brush, the closer to … ok, wait, that’s heels, but if you like a big luxurious brush, this is your answer.

So tell me, now that you’ve looked at your brushes, will you be picking any of these up?

Shake, Drop, Buff with new bareSkin from Bare Escentuals

Bare-Minerals-bareSkin-Foundation-and-Perfecting-Face-Brush
BARE ESCENTUALS
wants you to throw out everything you know about liquid foundation when reading about their latest release. And this was their stance when releasing their famed bareMinerals Foundation many moons ago. The brand highly dislikes liquid foundation because at the time most were filled with chemicals and just overall bad for the skin. So I’m surprised and delighted at the same time with this new release from them.

When looking at the bottle of bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($29/1oz), it looks like any other liquid foundation you’d find at cosmetic counters/drugstores but(it) they call this a foundation in the serum form. Ummm, huh? It’s a serum with half the ingredients of a traditional foundation and it comes with a lot of yes’s and no’s as in:

  • No Oils
  • No Silicon
  • No Water
  • No Parabens
  • No Fragrance
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Non-Chemical Broad Spectrum SPF 20

Created for all skin types and tones, the super thin formula combines a tone-correcting mineral foundation and a brightening serum in one container. And you can adjust the coverage by how many drops you use: 2 drops = sheer coverage, 4 drops = medium coverage, 6 drops = full coverage.

Bare-Minerals-bareSkin-Foundation

So does this give my face the look of perfect skin like it’s goal? In a word, well two, surprisingly YES! I was super surprised at how it covered the few dark spots I have on my face that I haven’t been able to get rid of. I mean, it covered them lickety-split AND it didn’t fade after an hour or two.

What’s in this formula is, “an ultra-thin, weightless fluid that harnesses jojoba-coated mineral pigments suspended in a coconut-derived base. Combined with a potent blend of vitamin C and supercharged lilac plant stem cells.” So it not over covers up marks on the face but the vitamin C will help make them fade away for good. And from one of their studies, they claim 95% of participants in a clinical study saw a measurable improvement in the appearance of dark spots over an 8 week period. Hmmmm. Well I’m going to use foundation anyway so might as well help out the dark spots I’ve been wanting to rid my face of, right?

Bare-Minerals-bareSkin-Perfecting-Face-Brush

And they recommend using this with their cool Perfecting Face Brush ($28). The brush has a reservoir in the middle of it where you drop the drops of foundation. I’m sure you can get good coverage with just using your fingers or a sponge but this using this buffing brush is actually pretty fun … as much as foundation application can be fun.

Is this a foundation you’ll be checking out?

And I’m a sucker for a great all-purpose Shadow Brush, which is the perfect size for many different applications on the lid and above.

3. GUERLAIN Terracotta Bronzing Powder Brush ($42 @ sephora.com) – this is the Rolls Royce of bronzing brushes. Everything about it says luxe! From the deep red bristles to the bronze-colored suede pouch with magnetic closure it comes in.

4. BDELLUIM TOOLS All-Purpose Blusher #964 – part of the Anti-Bacterial Brush Collection ($14.75 @ bdelliumtools.com) – confused about all the different blush brushes out there? What I’m Using … Right Now!

Clockwise:

WATER JEL Burn Jel Plus ($9.99/4oz @ burnjel.com) – yup I burned myself with my curling iron. And just last week I was scoffing at this product that protects against burns on the ears! Well mine was on my neck so I’m glad I had this on hand to not only to soothe it right after it happened but to help it heal.

CUCCIO Sugar Scrub in Vanilla Bean & Sugar ($29.98/19.5oz @ bebeautiful.com) – Maybe it’s my sweet tooth but I seem to gravitate towards sugar scrubs over salt scrubs. And this Vanilla Bean & Sugar smells like a cupcake. Yum!

B-LEVE b impeccable Foundation Brush ($7.49 @ b-leve.com) – I just picked up Armani’s Maestro Foundation to try out and have been using it with this great foundation brush. It’s just the right width and fits comfortably in my hand. And the best part? The price!

DERMORGANIC Daily Conditioning Shampoo ($5.99/3oz, $16/12oz @ dermorganic.com) – this one is sulfate-free and safe for color-treated hair (it’s not a color support(it) shampoo though), and it contains nutrients both hair and skin depend on, it can be used from head to toe. Yup, the hair and then on the skin. Now that’s a first!

LOLITA LEMPICKA Elle L’Aime EDP ($100/2.5oz @ neimanmarcus.com) – this scent, meaning “She Loves” en Francois, is certainly not a one note kinda scent. It’s multi-dimentional with top notes of Bergamot, Neroli, and lime, coconut, ylang-ylang and jasmine as the middle notes, all on a base of Myrrh,  vanilla and sandalwood. Very unique.

SEBASTIAN SIGNS Purusa Dream Extract ($28/1oz @ sebastiansigns.com) – what a great way to help you fall asleep. This luxury pillow spray combines sandalwood, organic clary sage and bergamot to make drifting off into lala land enjoyable and soothing. This smells so good, I would wear it as an everyday fragrance.

SEPHORA + Pantone Universe Jumbo Waterproof Eye Pencil Elemental Energy in Earth – Shark (shimmering shark gray) ($17 @ sephora.com) – this collection was inspired by the four elements (quick, name them!!) and this shimmery gray is wonderful by itself or when used to blend two colors together.

Who Makes the Best Eyelash Comb?

What-Makes-for-a-Good-smallOk, ok, we’ve all used the plastic lash combs but can we get serious?? They suck!! Really. Truly. Suck! The plastic teeth are just too thick to get through lashes when they are coated with mascara and when I do get them through, the teeth seem to clump together 3, 4 or 5 eyelashes together. Done with that and believe me!

Dont-use-this-kind-of-eyelash-comb

So I have to ask ...

What Makes for a Great Eyelash Comb?

Grey-border

Here are my selling points for making eyelash comb with metal teeth the only ones in existence!

  • The teeth in metal combs are thinner so they are able to get in-between each lash easier.
  • The metal teeth clean up easier with a little makeup remover.
  • The metal teeth don’t break.

Here are a few that get my stamp of approval:

The-Best-EyeLash-Combs

PERFECT LASH COMB ($15.95 @ perfectlash.com) – This one isn’t in my Hall of Fame for nothing! And the added bonus of curving to the shape of your eye makes using this one quick and oh so easy.

SEPHORA COLLECTION Pro Brow Comb #21 ($14 @ sephora.com)

MAKE UP FOR EVER #276 Eyelash Comb & Brush ($28 @ sephora.com)

ARDELL Lash Comb ($1.65 @ madamemadeline.com)

The Best Makeup Pencil Sharpeners

After running this feature on Smashbox’s new eye liners and seeing all the makeup sharpeners I owned, it got me thinking. What makes for a good one? As in, what makes for a good makeup pencil sharpener or what makes for a good anything really? After trying and playing with products for the past 12+ years, I think I have a bit of expertise when it comes to specific topics and what makes for a good something.

So I decided to start a new on-going feature called …

What-Makes-for-a-Good-2

and in these features I will discuss what I think makes for a good product or way of doing something beauty-related.

This first one will investigate what I think makes for a good makeup sharpener, so let’s get to it!!

What Makes for a Good Makeup Sharpener?

Like the ones shown in this picture I took of the ones I own, they all fill a purpose. Since there is no set size for any pencil for lips or eyes, you will probably find yourself having to own quite a few different ones.

If you are just going to invest in one or two of them, here is what you should look for in a good one. I like a duo sharpener like this one from Pixi Beauty I recently featured. Also, since I don’t have a trashcan next to my makeup table, a case that surrounds the sharpener to catch the shavings is also convenient. And with all the ones I’ve tried, that small pokey thing to poke color and shavings away from the blade is totally underrated. Believe it or not, only some include this pokey thing.

Here are some good ones that can get you by.

Makeup-Sharpeners-that-Get-the-Job-Done

Clockwise:

  • URBAN DECAY Grind House Double Barrel Sharpener ($10 @ urbandecay.com)
  • JAPONESQUE Dual Sharpener ($10.99 @ amazon.com)
  • SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Dual Antibacterial Sharpener ($4 @ sephora.com)
  • ULTA Cosmetic Pencil Sharpener ($2.50 @ ulta.com

But if you really want the best of the best, I’ve tried a bunch and these ones below are the best as they meet the key criteria:

  1. Should be able to sharpen two different sizes; so make it a duo, please.
  2. Should have a blade-cleaning pick with it. This is so useful!
  3. Should be encased to catch the pencil shavings.

The Strangest Looking Mascara Contraption You'll Ever See!

When it comes to combing out lashes after applying a few coats of mascara, I am a fan of the metal combs, not the plastic combs. This one from Perfect Lash Comb, which is in my Hall of Fame, or this recently discovered one from the ROYAL & LANGNICKEL line, called the Silk Brow/Lash Groom ($9.99 @ royalbrushstore.com) are two good ones to consider.

Royal-&-Langnickel-Silk-Brow-Lash-Groom-2
And this Mega Effects Mascara from AVON kind of uses the same kind of idea for applying their mascara. Using the bristles like one of these above combs, you comb in the mascara for an even and clump-free application. When I first saw this in a magazine, I didn’t see the correlation between the metal comb and mascara, but after getting it in my hands, it’s pretty obvious that this way works, and it works, well … click after the jump to see!

Make Up For Ever Artisan Brush Collection

For some reason I always thought the MAKE UP FOR EVER line had makeup brushes in it and good ones at that. Or maybe they did and just retooled (no pun intended) them to perfection, which is what I think they did with this release. Let me introduce you to their Artisan Brush Collection. Designed by Creator & Artistic Director Dany Sanz, this seems like a well thought out selection of makeup brush essentials and it each went through 25 stages of creation and was hand-crafted by 30 people from start to finish over a 5 year time period. Let’s take a further look ...
