Get Acquainted With … Argan Oil

I’m starting a new on-going feature here on the site called Get Acquainted With … where I spotlight a brand, ingredient or trend I think you should be aware of. First up is Argania Spinosa Kernal Oil, also known as Argan Oil. Argan Oil is a plant oil produced from the kernals of the argan tree that is andemic to Morocco. It can be used to help heal burns, in foods like to dip breads and on salads. In beauty it is known for its super moisturizing properties, to help with juvenile acne and of course in hair and body products. Source: Wikipedia.org.

Here are some that use it in beauty products:

Get-Acquainted-With-...-Argan-Oiljpg

1. YES TO BLUEBERRIES Face & Neck Oil $15.99/1oz @ walgreens.com.

2. BOTANIC ORGANIC Pomegranate & Argan Antioxidant Serum $30/1oz @ botanicorganic.com.

3. DERMORGANIC Leave-In Spray Therapy $19.99/3.4oz @ dermorganic.com

5. HERBAL ESSENCES Moroccan My Shine Nourishing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner $4.49/10.1oz each @ drugstore.com.

Now if you just want to cut out all the other ingredients like silicones and others that can be found in the above products and just get to the nitty-gritty, there are quite a few companies that make 100% Pure Argan Oil:

What I’m Loving Right Now, the Hair Edition

What-I'm-Loving-Now-the-Hair-Edition
1. OLIVIA GARDEN FingerBrush Vented Hair Brush ($13.96/small, $14.76/medium, $15.56/large @ oliviagarden.com and ulta.com) – I’ve never really turned to a hair brush to give me a great scalp massage but this one really does! The curved shape helps it hug the scalp and it has ionic bristles to help hair dry fast when used with a blow dryer.

2. OSCAR BLANDI Polish Blow-Out Crème ($25/4.2oz @ oscarblandi.com and folica.com) – Never does a blow-dry session go by where I don’t use a defrizz product. And this one from OB is doing it for me right now. The Jasmine Calming Complex it help repel humidity keep frizz and flyaways far away.

3. SHU UEMURA Detail Master Directional Fixing Spray ($38/6.3oz @ shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com) – I’ve been practicing my 40’s vintage hair waves lately and this spray really helps hold it the style in place without being crunchy.

4. KERASTASE Laque Dentelle Micro Mist Fixing Hairspray ($20.50/2oz, $36/8oz @ kerastase-usa.com) – a product that can be used with heat tools seems to be a rare find these days but I’m really loving this one as it helps my hair curls last longer than without and no product crunch when using it.

5. ECRU NEW YORK Acacia Protein Hair Masque ($25/8oz ecrunewyork.com) – with all that we put our hair through these days, a quality hair mask is simply essential. This one contains Acacia Collagen, sunflower seed oil, Shea Butter and Marine Extracts to repair strands.

6. DEVA CURL My Deva Towel ($12 @ mydevacurl.com) – are you still using a regular ol’ towel on your hair when you get out of the shower? Terry cloth towels promote frizz and are poor at drying the hair and this can be used on any type of hair.

5 Favorite … Hair Helpers

5-Favorite-...-Hair-Helpers
1.
KERASTASE Forme Fatale Voluptuous Blow-Dry Gel ($35/4.2oz, $182.1oz @ kerastase-usa.com) – for some reason I’ve been into having quite big hair these days and since I’m not that great at teasing my hair (it just doesn’t last!), I’ve been relying on this blow-dry gel to get me there and it has the bonus of UV and heat protection.

2. SCHWARZKOPF Igora Expert Mousse ($13.95/3.2oz @ amazon.com) - give your current color a kick with this one. This colour mousse lasts up to 8 washes and is super easy to use – just apply to towel-dried hair, leave on about 20 minutes and jump back in the shower and rinse. My color is 5-88 (light brown red extra) and it gives my hair just the right amount of boost without the commitment. Choose from different 13 shades!

3. SALLY HERSHBERGER 3-in-1 Volumizing Spray ($12.99/8.5oz @ cvs.com) – Since I want to keep my red hair red for longer than a few weeks, I rely on dry shampoos a lot. And this new one is infused with caffeine so I guess you could say it really gets my hair moving! Ok, not that funny but this does give strands some volume and texture to get you through the day.

4. FROM THE LAB Transforming Hair Cleanser No. 724 ($19.95/5oz @ fromthelab.com) – this one is 180 degrees from what you’re used to using on your hair in the shower. First, it doesn’t lather up, which might not be comfortable for some people but I’m telling you, the final results are worth it. It uses raspberry stem cell extract (to nourish the scalp), Andiroba Oil (for its omega-3 fatty acids), vitamin E, Castor Seed and Almond oils to do all the work – shampoo, condition and detangle. Yup, all in one!

5. REDKEN Move Ability 05 from the New Flex Collection ($19/1.7oz @ redken.com for salons near you) – I’ve often been tempted to cut off all my hair just so I can use all the pomades, waxes and sculpting gels out there but, sigh, I like it long. But with this Move Ability 05, I don’t have to! It’s a light cream-paste that I’ve been using to define the ends of my hair after blow drying.

5 Favorite ... Hair Tools

5-Favorite-Hair-Tools

1. SPORNETTE Ion Fusion 3” Aerated Hair Brush #186 ($24 @ bigdaddybeauty.com) – I have about 6 different styling brushes next to my hair dryer and this one has certainly become by go-to in the last month. It has Ion-Charged and Anti-Staric Crimped bristles, which quickly dries and styles strands. And the handle is one piece so no worrying about hairs getting caught.

2. ROWENTA BEAUTY Expertise – Versa Style ($229 @ rowentabeauty.com) – this was only a matter of time – an iron that curls and and can straighten. It has 1” floating Ceramic Titanium plates that will smooth frizz and straighten and the edges of either side of the long part of the tool are rounded so you can get curl too. And it heats up to 400 degrees in 30 seconds. This is major, people!

3. INSTYLER Rotating Hot Iron Hair Straightener ($99.95 @ ulta.com) – It’s funny when you find yourself nesting or juggling a lot of different tools how you forget about favorites, which this one certainly is!

4. CROC Turbolon Croc Titanium Wet to Dry Flat Iron 1 ½” ($154.19 @ amazon.com) – this is still my favorite hair straightener and does the job better than any other one I’ve tried. Need you know more?

5. GOLD N HOT Professional Ceramic Deep Waver ($39.99 @ folica.com) – this ceramic-plated iron gives deeper waves than this one and I would definitely recommend using a setting spray with it so the waves last in your hair.

What You Need for a Weekend Getaway

Weekend-Getaway-Beauty-Products

What-Makes-for-a-Good-smallNow that summer has wound down, so have the vacations. But we still want to go on those getaways, if only for a weekend but how many times have you forgotten something?

Here are some essentials you should pack before hitting the road next time:

Grey-border
Makeup Bag - SEPHORA COLLECTION The High Roller ($48 @ sephora.com) – this one had velcro’d in see-through makeup bags inside that you can store all your weekend items. Unroll it and hang it from the door with its built-in hanger to see all your items at one time.

Hair Volumizer - TAYA Amazon White Clay & Acacia Collagen Hair Plumper ($24/8oz @ tayabeauty.com) – no matter where I travel, I seem to bring my flat hair with me but this one seem to keep the case of the permanent flatsies at bay. The combo of a mousse and hairspray in one helps give hair volume and hold.

Nude Lippie - HOURGLASS COSMETICS Femme Nude Lip Stylo in Nude No. 5 ($30 @ hourglasscosmetics.com) – I love a lip balm when I’m traveling but I also need a little color or rather polish to my look, so what better way then with a nude lippie?

Sun Protection for Hair - L’OREAL Everpure UV Protect Spray in Rosemary Mint ($8.99/8.5oz @ amazon.com and drugstores nationwide) – since going full on red, as in redhead, I am super protective from keep it true as long as possible. The sun can wreak havoc on hair color, so do yourself a favor, if you’re not wearing a hat, spray on this protective “hat” of sunscreen. You spend good money on your hair color so shouldn’t you make it last?

Sun Protection for Skin - COPPERTONE Faces Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50 ($9.89/2oz @ coppertone.com) – no matter what time of year it is, You. Need. Sunscreen! Sometimes sunscreens can sting but this one is formulated for sensitive skins and doesn’t leave a white hue behind.

Deodorant/Antiperspirant - CERTAIN DRI Antiperspirant Roll-On for Excessive Perspiration ($6.29/1.2oz @ certaindri.com) – I’ve tried sooooo many out there and at the end of the day, this seems to be the only one that works and works consistently.

Cheek Color - NARS Multiple in Portofino ($39 @ narscosmetics.com) – I find that a medium coral on cheeks looks swell any time of year and is unexpected in the fall to winter months. And it makes me look wide awake than I may be feeling.

Face Mist - NEAL’S YARD REMEDIES White Tea Facial Mist ($19/1.52oz @ nyrorganic.com) - to soothe skin with the possible climate changes. No matter what time of year, I like to have a face mist on hand and this contains 92% organic ingredients.

Is Jane Carter the Solution?

I think out of all the hair styling products I use, smoothing creams seem to be my most go-to ones. Since I recently ran out of one, I was in dire need of another and this JANE CARTER SOLUTION Creamy Leave In Styling Smoother ($15/8oz) arrived just in time. And wow, was I surprised at the good-for … just about everything ingredients! The first few on the list are water, shea butter, mango butter, glycerin, kokum butter (a prize botanical butter from India) and rosemary leaf extract. Nice!

Jane-Carter-Creamy-Leave-In
A little about this fascinating line I had no idea existed – Ms. Carter has been working in the industry since the early 80’s and came out with her first product, the Hair Nourishing Serum, back in 1992, way before any line was really touting the power of essential oils and extracts in hair care; reminds me of the Carol's Daughter story a bit.

Now, the 23 sku strong line can be found in Whole Foods and some at Target, so I can’t wait to try some of the others in the line. Check out the other items @ janecartersolution.com.

Diamonds for the Hair? Yes, Redken!

Seems like a lot of the hair oils out there are just a bunch of silicones, which aren’t bad, and at the end of the ingredient list you’ll find the argan oil the product is named after. So I’ve become skeptical. I must say though, the copper box and container of REDKEN’s Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense really had me intrigued! So fancy that it just has to work, right? The old beauty adage, “if it smells/looks good, it must be good,” right?

The first place my eyes went when I received this in the mail after oooing and aahhhing at the aforementioned in my head was the ingredient list, of course.

Redken-Diamond-Oil-main

Helianthus Annus Seed Oil/Sunflower Seed Oil, Isopropyl Myristate (an alcohol that can be irritating to the scalp), Olea Europaea Oil/Olive Fruit Oil, Octyldodecanol (a skin conditioning agent), Simmondsia Chinensis Oil/Jojoba Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera Oil/Coconut Oil and so on (see photo just below for full list). Yes, this does contain a man-made fragrance, so if you find yourself allergic or don’t like products with synthetic fragrances, you may want to skip this.

Redken-Diamond-Oil-ingredie

BUT, if performance is your thing, read on …

As I mentioned before, most hair oils are nothing but silicones but this one doesn’t contain any ... maybe one of the ones towards the end of the ingredient list acts like one but isn’t considered one? Things that make you go hmmm…

Anyway, with the many good ingredients this one contains, it can be used in a few ways – a pre-shampoo treatment, a few drops before blow drying or as a polish to tame flyaways.

What you should also know is that it contains their own Shine Strong Complex, which is an infused blend of some of the other oils in the formula, coriander, camelina, and apricot, to seal in moisture and give hair lots of shine and who’s hair doesn’t need that?

Read more about it @ redken.com or pick it up for $40/3.4oz at salons nationwide.

If You Use Hot Hair Tools, You Need This!

Redken-Iron-Shape-11We’re all familiar with thermal protecting sprays for the hair for when using a hair dryer but now here comes one that is for use with hot tools. It’s REDKEN’s Iron Shape 11 that will protect your strands from a curling iron or flat iron up to 450°.

This is part of their Heat Styling Collection and great for misting on hair just before using one of the above tools. What’s unique about it is their Heatguard Complex, which prevents heat damage and ceramides to help you get a smooth, frizz-free finish, and also cranberry oil to help condition the hair as you heat it up.

And unlike this one, which can leave some residue if I'm not paying attention and spray on too much, this one doesn’t leave any sticky or tacky feel behind. So think of it as a "diet" version or "lite" version of it. $19/8.5oz @ redken.com and salons nationwide.
