5 Favorite ... Star Hair Products

5-Favorite-...-Star-Hair-Products

From L to R clockwise:

PUREOLOGY Cleansing Condition ($34/8.5oz @ pureology.com for salons nationwide) – just out, these  come in 3 different formulas to  suit your hair’s needs – Hydrate, Smooth Perfection and Strength Cure. These combine a shampoo + conditioner in one low-lather concoction to clean your strands and(it) maintain your salon color.

NUANCE Salma Hayek Mamey Fruit Texture Enhancing Finishing Spray ($9.99/5oz @ cvs.com and CVS stores nationwide) – like the above salt spray, this one gives hair some texture as well as keep it in place. One outlet called it a cross between a dry shampoo and a volumizer. It contains oat extracts to give softness to the texture and Mamey Fruit Extract, which is rich in vitamins and minerals.

REDKEN FPF 40 Rebel Tame ($22/8.5oz @ redken.com for salons nationwide) – I love me a smoothing cream and this one goes one step further. Part of the Frizz Dismiss(it) collection, this is their answer to the humidity in the air as all 7 products contain their Humidity Resist Complex.

SUAVE Sea Mineral Infusion Sea Salt Spray ($5.99/6.8oz @ walgreens.com) – tis the season for sea salt textured locks! If you can’t make your own from sea water, this one does fine and won’t break the bank.

AVEDA Color Conserve Daily Color Protect ($24/3.4oz @ aveda.com) – I’ll do just about anything to preserve my burgundy red hair and this is a new one I’ve incorporated into my hair regimen. This leave-in treatment contains their patented Color Conserve Complex to triple-protect strands. Triple? Yup, that’s what the brand says. It also protects against UVA/UVB rays, which I think we underestimate when it comes to also causing color fading.

DIY - How to Make Crystal’d Bobby Pins

I love most things that have to do with the hair, especially hair tools and hair accessories. When I was young I got really involved in making those ribbon barrettes and my fascination with anything I can stick in the hair has not waned! So consider this a tribute to my DIY ribbon barrettes I used to make.

5 Favorite ... Tools for Hair Teasing

I’ll admit it, I’m tease-challenged when it comes to giving my hair some good root volume. I just can’t seem to get the tease to go the distance, which I attribute to having fine hair. I’ve seen some people just use a plain ol’ comb but I’m just not that talented, so thankfully there are some products and tools out there to help. Here are my 5 Favorites...

Instyler VS Instyler MAX

Being a long-time fan of the original INSTYLER, I was excited to hear that they just came out with the InStyler MAX. Gotta love improvements to an existing product, right? Or did they take it too far? Hmmm, click after the jump to find out if this new one is better or if you should skip it.

The new MAX still uses tourmaline ceramic smoothing plates as the original and you can still do your straightening, soft curls, root boost and flip out the bottom, and has the auto safety shut-off, but there are a few new traits they have added with the new one so let’s compare a few key ones.

No More Crappy Dry Shampoos!

Dove-Refresh-+-Care-Volume-Dry-ShampooI’ve decided that going into 2015, I’ve done with less-than-desirable dry shampoos. So what constitutes a less-than-desirable one? Mainly a dry shampoo that makes strands look ashy, or ones that leaves residue or white flakes behind. No one has time for that!

Yes, I’ve had some luck here and there with them, but overall, most seem to be a big fail. One tip I read in Allure recently was if you were giving a new one a shot, put it back on the shelf it one of the ingredients is talc. Ewww…

So in reading all the products that one a Best of Beauty award from Allure, I decided to give a shot – DOVE Refresh + Care Volume Dry Shampoo. So does this one win my vote? Yup! Everything about this one just works – invisible-in-the-hair formula, helps my blowout last a little longer, and the price is super reasonable. Is this one you think you’ll be trying out? $5.99/5oz @ walgreens.com.

5 Essential Beauty Tools That Make Life Easier!

I’ve tried different versions of the below items in their categories and here are the ones I have found to work best. Yes, some may seem trivial (a nail clipper, really??) but only when I’ve used one that’s crappy, do I actually think about it. And now, you don't have to!

Do you have any beauty tools that you stand by? Do share in the comments!

5-Essential-Beauty-Tools-That-Make-Life-Easier

Best Foot Exfoliator and Nail File - FAN OUT Foot Scraper (small $35, large $42) and Nail File ($42). Both @ fanout.com – when did I write about both of these? Wow, back on September 7, 2011 and both are still going strong and I use them quite regularly! Now that’s proof in the pudding.

Best Nail Clipper - REVLON Deluxe Nail Clipper - $2.49 @ ulta.com and bedbathandbeyond.com - I’ve tried a lot of different nail clippers over the years and these from Revlon truly are the best. They're always sharp and never break. I keep one in the house, one in the car, one in my purse. I think I own about 6 of these total!

Best Tongue Cleaner - BREATH RX Gentle Tongue Scraper - $6.99/3 scrapers @ breathrx.com – I know, I know, who wants to talk about something as sexy as cleaning your tongue? Food can get caught in there and simply using your toothbrush to clean it just doesn’t do the job so invest in some of these scrapers and really get that tongue clean.

Best Hair Styler - INSTYLER 3-1 Rotating Iron ($99 @ getinstyler.com) – a great tool for quickly taking out bedhead kinks in the morning. And they just came out with a new MAX version. Details coming soon!

Get Acquainted With … Argan Oil

I’m starting a new on-going feature here on the site called Get Acquainted With … where I spotlight a brand, ingredient or trend I think you should be aware of. First up is Argania Spinosa Kernal Oil, also known as Argan Oil. Argan Oil is a plant oil produced from the kernals of the argan tree that is andemic to Morocco. It can be used to help heal burns, in foods like to dip breads and on salads. In beauty it is known for its super moisturizing properties, to help with juvenile acne and of course in hair and body products. Source: Wikipedia.org.

Here are some that use it in beauty products:

Get-Acquainted-With-...-Argan-Oiljpg

1. YES TO BLUEBERRIES Face & Neck Oil $15.99/1oz @ walgreens.com.

2. BOTANIC ORGANIC Pomegranate & Argan Antioxidant Serum $30/1oz @ botanicorganic.com.

3. DERMORGANIC Leave-In Spray Therapy $19.99/3.4oz @ dermorganic.com

4. NAIR 'Shower Power' Max with Moroccan Argan Oil $8.99/13oz @ drugstore.com

5. HERBAL ESSENCES Moroccan My Shine Nourishing Shampoo and Nourishing Conditioner $4.49/10.1oz each @ drugstore.com.

Now if you just want to cut out all the other ingredients like silicones and others that can be found in the above products and just get to the nitty-gritty, there are quite a few companies that make 100% Pure Argan Oil:

100%-Argan-Oil

1. JOSIE MARAN 100 Percent Pure Argan Oil $16/.5oz, $48/1.7oz, $96/5oz @ sephora.com.

2. ACURE ORGANICS 100% Certified Organic Argan Oil $14.99/1oz @ walgreens.com.

3. SHEA TERRA ORGANICS 100% Organic Moroccan Argan Oil $24/2oz @ walgreens.com

What I’m Loving Right Now, the Hair Edition

What-I'm-Loving-Now-the-Hair-Edition
1. OLIVIA GARDEN FingerBrush Vented Hair Brush ($13.96/small, $14.76/medium, $15.56/large @ oliviagarden.com and ulta.com) – I’ve never really turned to a hair brush to give me a great scalp massage but this one really does! The curved shape helps it hug the scalp and it has ionic bristles to help hair dry fast when used with a blow dryer.

2. OSCAR BLANDI Polish Blow-Out Crème ($25/4.2oz @ oscarblandi.com and folica.com) – Never does a blow-dry session go by where I don’t use a defrizz product. And this one from OB is doing it for me right now. The Jasmine Calming Complex it help repel humidity keep frizz and flyaways far away.

3. SHU UEMURA Detail Master Directional Fixing Spray ($38/6.3oz @ shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com) – I’ve been practicing my 40’s vintage hair waves lately and this spray really helps hold it the style in place without being crunchy.

4. KERASTASE Laque Dentelle Micro Mist Fixing Hairspray ($20.50/2oz, $36/8oz @ kerastase-usa.com) – a product that can be used with heat tools seems to be a rare find these days but I’m really loving this one as it helps my hair curls last longer than without and no product crunch when using it.

5. ECRU NEW YORK Acacia Protein Hair Masque ($25/8oz ecrunewyork.com) – with all that we put our hair through these days, a quality hair mask is simply essential. This one contains Acacia Collagen, sunflower seed oil, Shea Butter and Marine Extracts to repair strands.

6. DEVA CURL My Deva Towel ($12 @ mydevacurl.com) – are you still using a regular ol’ towel on your hair when you get out of the shower? Terry cloth towels promote frizz and are poor at drying the hair and this can be used on any type of hair.

5 Favorite … Hair Helpers

5-Favorite-...-Hair-Helpers
1.
KERASTASE Forme Fatale Voluptuous Blow-Dry Gel ($35/4.2oz, $182.1oz @ kerastase-usa.com) – for some reason I’ve been into having quite big hair these days and since I’m not that great at teasing my hair (it just doesn’t last!), I’ve been relying on this blow-dry gel to get me there and it has the bonus of UV and heat protection.

2. SCHWARZKOPF Igora Expert Mousse ($13.95/3.2oz @ amazon.com) - give your current color a kick with this one. This colour mousse lasts up to 8 washes and is super easy to use – just apply to towel-dried hair, leave on about 20 minutes and jump back in the shower and rinse. My color is 5-88 (light brown red extra) and it gives my hair just the right amount of boost without the commitment. Choose from different 13 shades!

3. SALLY HERSHBERGER 3-in-1 Volumizing Spray ($12.99/8.5oz @ cvs.com) – Since I want to keep my red hair red for longer than a few weeks, I rely on dry shampoos a lot. And this new one is infused with caffeine so I guess you could say it really gets my hair moving! Ok, not that funny but this does give strands some volume and texture to get you through the day.

4. FROM THE LAB Transforming Hair Cleanser No. 724 ($19.95/5oz @ fromthelab.com) – this one is 180 degrees from what you’re used to using on your hair in the shower. First, it doesn’t lather up, which might not be comfortable for some people but I’m telling you, the final results are worth it. It uses raspberry stem cell extract (to nourish the scalp), Andiroba Oil (for its omega-3 fatty acids), vitamin E, Castor Seed and Almond oils to do all the work – shampoo, condition and detangle. Yup, all in one!

5. REDKEN Move Ability 05 from the New Flex Collection ($19/1.7oz @ redken.com for salons near you) – I’ve often been tempted to cut off all my hair just so I can use all the pomades, waxes and sculpting gels out there but, sigh, I like it long. But with this Move Ability 05, I don’t have to! It’s a light cream-paste that I’ve been using to define the ends of my hair after blow drying.

5 Favorite ... Hair Tools

5-Favorite-Hair-Tools

1. SPORNETTE Ion Fusion 3” Aerated Hair Brush #186 ($24 @ bigdaddybeauty.com) – I have about 6 different styling brushes next to my hair dryer and this one has certainly become by go-to in the last month. It has Ion-Charged and Anti-Staric Crimped bristles, which quickly dries and styles strands. And the handle is one piece so no worrying about hairs getting caught.

2. ROWENTA BEAUTY Expertise – Versa Style ($229 @ rowentabeauty.com) – this was only a matter of time – an iron that curls and and can straighten. It has 1” floating Ceramic Titanium plates that will smooth frizz and straighten and the edges of either side of the long part of the tool are rounded so you can get curl too. And it heats up to 400 degrees in 30 seconds. This is major, people!

3. INSTYLER Rotating Hot Iron Hair Straightener ($99.95 @ ulta.com) – It’s funny when you find yourself nesting or juggling a lot of different tools how you forget about favorites, which this one certainly is!

4. CROC Turbolon Croc Titanium Wet to Dry Flat Iron 1 ½” ($154.19 @ amazon.com) – this is still my favorite hair straightener and does the job better than any other one I’ve tried. Need you know more?

5. GOLD N HOT Professional Ceramic Deep Waver ($39.99 @ folica.com) – this ceramic-plated iron gives deeper waves than this one and I would definitely recommend using a setting spray with it so the waves last in your hair.
