Need A Resolution? How About Protecting Your Hair Color?

Vidal-Sassoon-VS-Color-Spray-Coilor-ProtectDo you believe in New Year’s resolutions? I really don’t or if I do make one, I make it a small addition to what I’m already doing. For example, I need to wear sunscreen everyday on the backs of my hands, so I put this one in the console in my car.

I’ve also decided that I really need to protect my hair color so the new VIDAL SASSOON PRO SERIES Color Protect Spray from their new Color Collection Pro Series now sits in between a hair oil and styling cream, so I don’t forget to spray some on. It protects from the heat from the dryer, which can dull hair color in no time at all. $3.99/5.07oz @ drugstores nationwide.

Confused About Surfactants in Hair Care? Read This...

Surfactants

I’ve been back and forth here about the topic of surfactants (Sodium Laureth Sulfates, Sodium Laurel Sulfates, SLS’s) in shampoos. For a while now, I thought that if a shampoo had SLS’s in it, it could not be used on color-treated hair as in, it would not make it last. Period. End of story. How did I come to this conclusion? Probably from a lot of things I read, heard, and the trend of sulfate-free products coming out didn’t help either (and do you remember a few years ago when I discovered that just because a shampoo is sulfate-free doesn’t mean it will make you hair color last any longer? Yup, it’s a confusing world!).

I’ve been lucky enough to come across some major hair people lately and decided to ask them their opinion about SLS’s and if yes, they do kill hair color, or not.

Planning on Swimming this Season? Then Read This...

For some reason I am more into the beach this year. I mean, I’ve been about 3 times in the past month and that’s three times more than 2010 total! So of course I have to get all stylish. I bought a good fitting top here, a swimskirt bottom here, a beach cover up here and a really cool sunhat here. For those who actually go swimming in the ocean or the pool, don’t forget to think about your strands and keeping them sane this summer. Thankfully there is now a line of products just for you beach junkies! It’s called TONIC and was created for surfers and beach bunnies that love the water but also love their hair. It conquers sun, saltwater and is quite overall quite earth-friendly.

Tonic-Hair-Care Product line is 4 skus and includes:

The Chronic Shampoo and The Chronic Conditioner – a daily use duo infused plant-based ingredients into the formulas and is both paraben-free and sulfate-free. $14/8oz each.
Threesome Tonic
– a 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner and body wash in one that's also sulfate and paraben-free. This one contains vitamin B5. $12/8oz.
Luster Tonic
– a leave-in conditioner that includes aloe vera and grapeseed oil in the formula. $14/8oz.

The Latest In Hair Styling Products

Pureology-LivingProof-IT&LY PUREOLOGY just put out their Colour Stylist line, which are styling products for color-treated hair. Seems like there should be more of these available for the average person, right? Each of the 6 products contains their patented AntiFade Complex with Keravis, which is a hair fortifier to protect the hair from breaking and they each smell like their signature vanilla, rose and Mandarin Orange scent. Mmm. Product pick – Colour Stylist FortifyingHeatSpray - $22/6oz @ pureology.com.

LIVING PROOF just came out with a new Full line of products aimed at, well, exactly what you think, fuller hair!  And the Root Lifting Spray from the latest collection, called Full, is really rocking my hair right now and giving me some lift just where you think. Maybe it’s the PolyfluoroEster ingredient inside because I’ve tried a few root lifting sprays and they’ve only been ok but this one? I give it two thumbs up – it not only makes the hair strong but it also lasts in the hair. $24/5.5oz @ livingproof.com.

The IT&LY HAIRFASHION line is a new one to the site and was used on the set of Sex and the City 2 and Gossip Girl, so you know it must come with some hipness to it. I don’t use many of those shine serums as they seem to just make my hair greasy but their Purity Design Pure Water Drops don’t seem to grease up my strands than polish them and make them a tad piece-y and it smells like sandalwood. Nice touch. $32.49/1.7oz @ haircarechoices.com.

Let's Talk Hair with L'Oreal & Phyto

L'Oreal-EverPure-UV-Protect-Spray-Phyto-Phytomist Speaking of sprays, how about two made just for strands?

L’OREAL EverPure UV Protecting Spray ($8.99/8.5oz @ drustore.com). If you color your hair and you’re hitting the beach this summer, this is a must-have product! It’s sulfate-free (duh, would hope it would be) and contains UV filters to keep the sun from changing your hair color.

This product contains Methyl Parabens, which is considered by some as an ingredient of concern. Read more here. Read my ingredient disclaimer here.

PHYTO Phytomist ($26/5oz @ drugstore.com) – made just for dehydrated hair, which can happen from coloring or perming (perming?? Like pantyhose, will the perm ever come back into fashion?!), this uses botanicals to help prevent oxidation. FYI, it has silicones in it.
