I’ve tended to shy away from luminous powders on a whole as I always seem to try some that are just too much; too much shimmer or sparkle. And I’m just not too sure they are all that necessary. However, this one is definitely not(it) too shimmery and not at all sparkly and totally wearable. HOURGLASS COSMETICS’ new Ambient Lighting Bronzer ($50) is like a regular bronzer/blush with just a kick of luminosity to it. Seriously! I really thought this was going to be too much for me but it wasn’t.
Browsing face powder
I can’t believe it’s been 15 years since the debut of TARTE COSMETICS! I remember writing about their first-ever product, the iconic cheek stain. So to celebrate, they are putting out a whole bunch of new products under the 15 Year Anniversary Collection tag.
First up? The Park Ave Princess Contour Palette ($34). Makeup contouring really took off as a trend in 2014 and doesn’t seem to be slowing down in 2015.
From L to R clockwise:
Matte Lippie Love - CAILYN COSMETICS Extreme Matte Tint in #3 Illusionist - $19 @ cailyncosmetics.com – matte lippies are my thing right now, what can I say and this rosy nude goes great with everything.
Shadow Love - DOLCE & GABBANA Perfect Mono Cream Eye Color - $36 @ dolcegabbana.com and nordstrom.com – this is the first go-around in the category of cream shadow for the brand and I must say they’ve done a good job – 14 long-lasting shades with great textures and finishes like matte and pearls to choose from. Color picks: Dahlia (shown here) and Cocoa.
Hot Pink Lippie Love - SHU UEMURA Vision of Beauty – Rouge Unlimited in Fuschia - $30 @ shuuemura.com – I’m a sucker for hot pink lippies and this one from Shu, with its hybrid pigment, is a really nice surprise for fall.
Nude Gloss Love - AERIN Weekday Lip Gloss - $30 @ saks.com – it’s not often that I reach for a lip gloss but for some reason, a true nude lippie makes your look, well, look the most polished. And this nude gives color! Nothing worse than a nude that skimps on the pigment.
Primer Love - COVER FX Calming Primer - $38/1oz @ sephora.com – if your skin is sensitive or you have Rosacea, this face primer was made just for you. The Endothelyol inside relieves redness and they’ve also included St. John’s Wort inside to handle inflammation.
Face Illuminator Love - MIRABELLA Faerie Sparkle Swirling Pearl Brilliant - $40 @ mirabellabeauty.com – holiday parties are upon us, so why not add a touch of pearly glow to your cheeks and décolletage? This mineral-based highlighter is one of the better quality ones I’ve seen in some time.
Nail Love - CUCCIO Colour Nail Lacquer in Java Va Voom and Cream & Sugar from the Café Cuccio Winter Colour Collection - $8.50 @ hbbeautybar.com - a really great quality nude is seasonless and this Java Va Voom one is the perfect shade of coffee with 2 creams in it and when you need a little extra zhoosh on tips or toes, Cream & Sugar is a darker nude with tiny flecks of multi-colored sparkle.
Cheek Love - BENEFIT Majorette - $28 @ benefitcosmetics.com and macys.com – and blush that gives you that sexy flush is never out(it) of season and this pinky-peach, cream-to-powder one will give you an instant boost. Wear it alone of under other blushes. And I love the slight tangerine scent to it!
Primer Love - NYX 'Honey Dew Me Up' Primer - $17 @ ulta.com – it’s certainly no secret that I love honey and seek products out that contain it, this one that uses it in a primer surprised me. First it’s in the gel form and it has tiny gold flecks that help with overall radiance. Ok I guess! What really impressed me is the way it felt while applying it and after applying it. Unlike most face primers, this one didn’t instantly disappear into my skin and actually did make it feel a tad dewy until it set. My skin really felt soft, smoothed out and “prepped” for the next step, which is an overall first. Big recommendation.
Face Love - PACIFICA ‘Perfect Lotus’ Universal Powder - $16 @ beauty.com – this buildable pressed mineral powder really brightened up my complexion and I was really surprised how universal the Light shade was! It blended in nicely and didn’t sit on top of any lines in my face.
Fragrance Love - CARVEN L’eau de Toilette - $79/1.7, $104/3.3oz only @ sephora.com – I’ve become quite the eau de parfum snob in that I feel I’m sort of wasting my time by choosing an eau de toilette as that scent is not as concentrated as a parfum version. Well this one may change my mind.
Aside from the lovely fresh, grassy, and totally feminine fragrance this one imparts, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say it’s the more concentrated version as it certainly wears like one! This release is considered the “younger sister” of the Le Parfum that came out in 2013 as they share the same bottle design and some of the same composition like sweet pea, freesia, white hyacinth and white woods, among others, this one is considered the “sweeter,” of the two.
Zit Love - COVER FX Blemish Treatment Concealer - $38/2.5g @ coverfx.com – I’m always so hesitant to put any makeup on a blemish for fear of making it worse but thanks to CFX, they want to take that fear away. The formula contains 10% Salicylic Acid to treat and Babchi Seed Extract to increase cell renewal. Check out the other new products in the blemish treatment collection.
More Nail Love - MILANI Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Mauving Forward - $3.99 @ milanicosmetics.com – I’m finding myself not quite ready to jump into the fall just yet but am inching my way towards it with this shade of purply-mauve.

Face Love - JOUER COSMETICS Essentials Matte Touch ($26 @ jouercosmetics.com) – It’s officially the season of shiny faces, so make sure you carry a translucent mattifier with you at all times. This one from Jouer really absorbs oil and contains good-for-skin ingredients like vitamins C, D & E and Willow Bark Extract.
Wipe Love - TARTE ‘Fresh Eyes’ Maracuja Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Wipes ($12/30 wipes @ tartecosmetics.com) – I love me some face wipes and it was only a matter of time before our tarte friends came out with some. These combine maracuja with fruit extracts to fully remove makeup and nourish the skin.
Body Love - THE GRAPESEED CO Custom Lotion in Mama’s Blend ($22/8oz @ grapeseedco.com) – While I prefer a body oil to a lotion these days, I’m simply loving this lotion in grapeseed, aloe & coconut! And it’s made with quality ingredients. Make your own custom lotion with their rich vinotherapy body lotion and you can even choose your own name and bottle color.
Hair Love - PUREOLOGY ‘Strength Cure’ Restorative Masque ($50/5.2oz @ pureology.com on where to buy) – No matter what month the calendar says, my strands always seems in need of a hair mask. This latest mask from one of my favorite hair care lines fortifies strands with Asta-Repair including Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant, which reduces breakage of micro-scarred/damaged color-treated hair.
Fragrance Love - NOMAD TWO WORLDS Wild Fire EDP from the Raw Spirit Collection ($35/7.5ml rollerball @ nomadtwoworlds.com) – this warm scent pays tribute to one of the founder’s native land of Australia with sandalwood, creamy amber along with ylang ylang, jasmine on a base of musk and cedarwood. Really nice.

So far in 2014, highlighting and contouring has to be the hottest trend right now and makeup companies are hearing the rumbles and putting out products to make it easy to do just that.
Take this one from one of my favorite lines, IT COSMETICS. Their just released My Sculpted Face contains 6 waterproof powders to be used to contour and sculpt your way to a natural look. I think I first got turned onto it after seeing the Allure magazine’s 2013 Blogger of the Year, Cara Brook from Maskcara and her Hac-ing demonstration. I tried it a few times with different products and just couldn’t seem to find the right mix of colors. Maybe I wasn’t choosing the right shades? Or maybe I just need more practice! Either way, I’m quite fascinated with the whole thing and was excited to try this one from IT.
Chances are you are going to be hitting up a few holiday parties in the next few weeks and part of what I love about this time of year is the permission to kick your makeup look a little. A little dab of shimmer, iridescence or gleam is a great way to show your holiday spirit. Below are the items I’m using to do it up right this season. Ho! Ho! Ho!
Clockwise from L to R:
HARD CANDY Shadow Dancers Liquid to Powder Eyeshadow in Bold & Beautiful ($6 @ walmart.com) - both shades contain luminizing pearls to make eye really … dance!
GLEAM BY MELANIE MILLS Body Radiance in Rose Gold ($15/1oz, $30/2oz, $40/3.5oz @ amazon.com) – this all-in-one moisturizer and body glow is nice for highlighting the fronts of the legs and décolletage.
6 Heart Princess Love in Wink by Takashi Murakami for SHU UEMURA False Eyelashes ($30 @ shuuemurausa.com) – Lashes add glamour to any look and these unique ones are adorned with a heart on each one and combines brown and pink lashes. How fun!
BARE ESCENTUALS Touch To-Glow ($14 @ macys.com) – for when you want a little luminosity, not glitter or harsh sparkle, this one will do the trick.
URBAN DECAY Naked Illuminating Shimmering Powder for Face and Body ($29 @ ulta.com) – a gorgeous shimmery powder that only UD can make perfect. I feel like this should have come with some kind of puff instead of a flat brush. Still nice though.

CHANEL’s new Les Beiges Collection is hitting the streets next week and I couldn’t be more excited!
Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15 ($57.50 <---odd pricing @ chanel.com)), comes in 7 shades and is your answer for a lightweight powder with a sheer finish. It’s hot everywhere so who wants to spackle a liquid foundation on right now?
‘Tis the season for sweaty oily skin, oh boy! So now is when you need to invest in something that will keep your skin in check like JOUER’s new Mattifying Translucent Powder ($30 @ jouercosmetics.com). This powder is part of their new Summer Escapes Collection and is so finely milled, no wonder it is able to keep skin matte! The finish is very sheer and it has some good-for-skin ingredients like gingko biloba leaf extract, vitamin E, aloe vera and it’s also paraben-free.
So if you have an issue with oily skin or makeup not staying in place this season, you might want to give this one a whirl.
