Toni Brattin Answers My Hair Volume Woes

I kinda wish I had done more stories on clip ons and hair extensions now that the Good Hair movie is out and there more attention to all things hair. I have to assure you that my fascination with fake hair started many years ago, as many-a-friend can attest to and you can even see one my favorite wigs here (scroll down). Anyway, I’m quite into a few of the TONI BRATTIN hair accessories right now. As I mentioned in this last feature on this topic, I’m convinced that if you are uncomfortable wearing a wig or any other hair pieces, a clip in like the below ones could be your answer. And these ones will give you more volume than you could ever get on your own and without the commitment. And because your own hair is mostly covering it, it looks like your own!

Here are my recommendations from her line that I just don’t think you can go wrong with, price and all:

Topper Hair Extensions Soft Curls Kit ($29.90) – is comprised of (1) 2” wide x 11” in length piece and (4) 1 ½” wide x 9” in length pieces. I’m not sure really how to use the Topper piece yet but I’m still playing with it and I’m sure I’ll find a good place and use!

Toni’s Topper Hair Extensions 5 Piece Filler Kit ($28.50) – is comprised of (6) 1” wide x 11” in length pieces.

 Quick facts about the line:

  • Each style comes in 14 different colors but they regularly run out so put a watch if yours is not in stock right now.
  • Each piece has a clip on the underside that you simple pop open, slide on, and pop closed. Super easy and they really stay on.
  • If you need to clean them, just hand wash with a mild shampoo.

I’m hoping Ms. Toni will come up with a storage system for these pieces though. Since they are synthetic, they can get tangled and  you don’t want to be as rough with them as real hair.

In conclusion: There’s so many different options when it comes to adding hair to your own. Be it synthetic, or real, prices are all over the place. So while real hair is ideal, these do the job nicely to test the waters to see if this is something you could be into. See more about the line only @ hsn.com. And I'm sure I'll be testing out some other hair pieces very soon. I'll keep you posted!

Hairdo -- My Latest Obsession

I was recently all hot on the press-on nails and now I’m back on the hair pieces again. Is it because I Tivo The Wendy Williams Show every day? Or that overall hair pieces are just getting more and more realistic looking!? My latest woo-hoo is the Bump Up the Volume by HAIRDO ($99 @ qvc.com), which is part of the new Stylables collection that just came out. This one is attached to the crown of the hair to give you that “Bumpits” kick. I mean, this is something I can use, ok, honey?? (I seem to get somewhat fierce when I wear a piece).

What’s also unique about the Stylables collection of hair is that the synthetic hair was developed with what they call Tru2Life fiber that can withstand heat up to 350 degrees. Did you hear that? Should I say it again? Now, again, this is something else I can work with!

I’m convinced that if you can match your hair color or at least get it in the right color family, them some of these clip-in hair pieces can work for you too (this brand comes in eight different shades). And I seem to be most drawn to those that are worn underneath for more volume.  I can walk in a room and not feel like everyone is staring at me because I am wearing fake hair.

My only suggestion would be to the overall length. Not many people have hair that cascades down to 20” so chopping off at least 5” to this one would make it perfect.

Have you ever tried wearing a hair piece or do you already? Please share you experience and work it, girl!

Hairdo Helps You Fake It Oh-So-Well

Hairdo I’m a big fan of wigs, hair pieces, etc. They’re just so fun and don’t require any long-term commitment! My latest discovery is from a line that came out a little while ago, HAIRDO. You know the one from Jessica Simpson? They simply clip in and away you and your volume go.

The hair is made is of a Kanekalon Vibralite modacrylic fiber, so know that you can’t use any kinds of heating tools on it for styling. What you see is what you get. They do have some that are made of real hair but we're just focusing on the faux ones here.

They comes in quite a few different lengths like the 10” Clip-In Straight Extension, 15” Clip-In Wavy and the one I tried, which was the 22” Clip-In Straight Extension. This one was a little too long, which is fine since I just had my hair dresser cut a few inches off last time I saw her. (I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself!) Now it looks a little more real.

The biggest challenge with any kind of clip-in hair you use is matching it to your current shade. The pieces of this particular brand come in 16 multi-tonal shades so you should be able to find one to suit you or you can get one in the shade you like and have your real hair dyed to match. No matter what age, hair styles are meant to be fun and this is just one more way to experiment.

Here’s a great video of how to do it or click below to see it. So simple to put in really!

Check out hairuwear.com for locations near you. Do you sport hair pieces and if so, what types are you favorites?
